What safety precautions should I take during the solar eclipse?
Observing a solar eclipse is a memorable experience, but it’s important to do so safely to protect your eyes and health. Here are some essential safety tips:
- Eye Safety: Use special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers, that meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for direct viewing of the sun. Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for looking at the sun.
- Proper Use of Eclipse Glasses: Always wear your eclipse glasses while watching the sun before and after totality. You can remove them only during totality, when the sun is completely covered by the moon, to safely view the eclipse without glasses. Put the glasses back on as soon as the sun starts to reappear.
- Indirect Viewing Methods: If you don’t have eclipse glasses, consider using a pinhole projector. This DIY method projects an image of the sun onto a surface, allowing you to view the eclipse indirectly.
- Sun Exposure Precautions: Since you may be outside for a long time to observe the eclipse, apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing, such as hats, to guard against prolonged sun exposure.

While witnessing a solar eclipse from a scenic vantage point might sound appealing, hiking in the Adirondack High Peaks or on trails above 3,000 feet during the eclipse is not recommended. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation advises against hiking these trails during mud season to protect both hikers and the trails themselves.

One such trail is the Heaven Hill Farm Trail in Lake Placid, which provides an excellent viewing spot without the risks associated with higher elevation trails
